Unleash-your-powerThe following five principles underpin the tips that follow, forming the framework upon which to achieve your maximum potential power.

  1. Focus. Lesson One teaches new riders that your eyes steer the bike. Get distracted and focus on something other than where you want to go and you’ll find yourself somewhere that you hadn’t planned on being. At work or home, focus somewhere that’s out of scope from your goals and it will divert your power, pull you off course, and draw you away from your destination.
  2. Choices. You alone control your motorcycle — and life — by the choices you make. No one else is in your shoes and any advice, comes through the sender’s filters. Continuously deferring to the opinions of others especially when it doesn’t feel right, is giving away your power.
  3. Objectivity. Riding a motorcycle proficiently requires that you obtain the appropriate skills. It also requires that you objectively assess the situation to respond appropriately. While the consequences of losing your cool at home or work may differ, it’s still going to affect your effectiveness. Things can happen that upset you but giving your emotions power distorts reality and leads to less than ideal choices.
  4. Self-care. A motorcycle that’s out of fuel, needs new spark plugs, or has worn out tread on its tires isn’t going to perform very well, especially if the road gets challenging. Take care of body, mind, and spirit, and you’ll be amazed at how much power is available to you.
  5. Appropriate speed. There’s no point in being reckless with the power that’s available to you. Proceed at the speed that’s appropriate for the situation and within your skill level. Slowing down takes proficiency, self-control and confidence. While you may get away with speeding, you may not have time to react when the unexpected pops out in front of you. Going faster than your resources or skills support will eventually land you in trouble, on your bike or in life.

Proficiency and confidence go hand in hand with learning how to access personal power. No matter what skill you’re learning, developing it takes patience, practice and persistence.

Every time you’re faced with a new challenge, there’ll be a learning curve as you discover increasing depths of power. The outcome is greater confidence, advanced skills and higher effectiveness.
